    Meritocracy

For our April public meeting sociologist Jo Littler will talk about her book 'Against Meritocracy: culture, power and myths of mobility'. The idea that societies should be (indeed are) founded on conceptions of individual merit, where the able or good rise and are duly rewarded, has become central to many justifications of inequality. In fact, as Jo says, the whole concept of meritocracy is deeply flawed. Who decides that a nurse is worth more than a banker? When our parents social and economic status remains the most dominant predictor of our future earnings how can it be claimed that we live in a meritocracy.
